What is CEFR?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard. It describes language ability on a scale from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. This system makes it easy for employers and schools to understand how well you speak English.

The Six CEFR Levels

A1 | Beginner

At this level, you can use very basic everyday expressions. You can introduce yourself and ask simple questions about personal details.

A2 | Elementary

You can understand sentences about basic personal and family information. You can communicate in simple and routine tasks.

B1 | Intermediate

You can deal with most situations while traveling in an English-speaking area. You can describe experiences, dreams, and ambitions briefly.

B2 | Upper Intermediate

You can understand the main ideas of complex text. You can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.

C1 | Advanced

You can express yourself fluently without much searching for expressions. You can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.

C2 | Mastery

You can understand with ease practically everything heard or read. You can summarize information from different sources and reconstruct arguments into a coherent presentation.

Why CEFR Levels Matter

Knowing your level helps you choose the right study materials. It also allows you to set clear goals. If you are at B1, your next step is B2. This clear path keeps you motivated. Most tutoring platforms like iTalki or Preply use these levels to match you with the right teacher.
