The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard. It describes language ability on a scale from A1 for beginners up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. This system makes it easy for employers and schools to understand how well you speak English.
The Six CEFR Levels
A1 | Beginner
At this level, you can use very basic everyday expressions. You can introduce yourself and ask simple questions about personal details.
A2 | Elementary
You can understand sentences about basic personal and family information. You can communicate in simple and routine tasks.
B1 | Intermediate
You can deal with most situations while traveling in an English-speaking area. You can describe experiences, dreams, and ambitions briefly.
B2 | Upper Intermediate
You can understand the main ideas of complex text. You can interact with native speakers with a degree of fluency and spontaneity.
C1 | Advanced
You can express yourself fluently without much searching for expressions. You can use language flexibly for social, academic, and professional purposes.
C2 | Mastery
You can understand with ease practically everything heard or read. You can summarize information from different sources and reconstruct arguments into a coherent presentation.
